right to use the Earth
The right to use the Earthi gives everyone the right to use the earthi's resources from birth, equal rights for everyone. No one can argue that it would be unfair or unjust to give everyone the same rights to emit CO2 and other greenhouse gases, for example. The usage rights of all people combined must leave enough space for nature and its biodiversity. They must never exceed the carrying capacity of the Earthi and must therefore scrupulously respect all planetary boundaries. In a transitional phase, the poorest people and societies will acquire additional user rights. These rights are based on the ecological debt imposed on them. This will enable them to increase their production of wealth quickly and in the most sustainable way, so that they can finally live in dignity. Moreover, with the introduction of this right to use the Earthi, democracy acquires its full meaning, because the principle of equality is not only political and economic, but from now on also ecological.

Whichever way you look at it, all our wealth comes from the Earth. Very slowly we are beginning to recognise an uncomfortable but increasingly important truth. We cannot allow the many economic activities in which we all engage to exceed the carrying capacity of our planet. The awareness that the planet we live on is very much like a fragile spaceship only came in the second half of the 20th century. We need to keep it in good shape because we cannot live without it.
