Wereld Sociaal Forum 2016 in Canada

Van 9 tot 14 augustus 2016 zal zich in Montreal het 12^de Wereld Sociaal Forum i afspelen. Sinds het eerste forum in het Braziliaanse Porto Alegre in januari 2001, belandt dit grootste treffen van de mondiale civiele samenleving i voor de eerste maal in het Noorden. De vorige edities waren immers steeds in Zuid-Amerika, Afrika i of Azië i.

De organisatoren mikken op 50 à 80.000 deelnemers uit zowat 5.000 organisaties. Er wachten hen op 10, 11 en 12 augustus wel 1.500 activiteiten om uit te kiezen.

Dertien thema’s zijn geselecteerd voor dit forum. Ze gaan van economische alternatieven en democratisering van de kennis tot de wereld van de arbeid i versus het neoliberalisme en culturele, artistieke en filosofische uitdrukkingen voor een andere wereld. (db)

In de meeste zeeën en oceanen wordt al enkele decennia meer vis gevangen dan ze kunnen verdragen. We zijn nochtans al lang gewaarschuwd voor de kwalijke gevolgen van overbevissing. Begin jaren zeventig van vorige eeuw nemen de vangsten van ansjovis in Peru een forse duik van naar schatting wel achttien miljoen ton naar een paar miljoen ton. Omstreeks 1990 is het de beurt aan de kabeljauw voor de kusten van Newfoundland in Oost-Canada om vrijwel te verdwijnen.
