Pandemieverdrag in aantocht

Er moest al lang een verdrag zijn om een volgende pandemie beter aan te pakken. De World Health Assembly heeft nu beslist dat het voor binnen een jaar is... Soms weet internationale samenwerking toch vooruitgang te boeken, heel traag.

In mei 2021 komt The Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness & Response tot een keiharde conclusie. De aanpak van de coronacrisis was catastrofaal slecht. Hij leidde tot een rampzalige pandemie die perfect te vermijden was. De kritiek in hun rapport “dat de onafhankelijkheid van de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie moet worden versterkt” was in vergelijking daarmee wel héél zacht geformuleerd.

De Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie heeft zich op haar jaarlijkse World Health Assembly - van 27 mei tot 1 juni 2024 in Genève - gebogen over de onderhandelingen over een pandemieverdrag. Er is beslist dat die ten laatste binnen het jaar afgerond moeten zijn.

Wellicht zal er dus meer dan vijf jaar voorbijgaan sinds een pandemie verwoestend toesloeg vooraleer de wereld beschikt over een Mondiaal Pandemieverdrag. (db)
